800G Optical Modules Whitepaper (III): FEC, OSFP-XD & Future CPO/LPO
Reliability and serviceability at 800G depend heavily on Forward Error Correction (FEC) and packaging. This part covers oFEC, new hot-plug standards, and the roadmap to 1.6T via CPO and LPO.
Enhanced FEC: The Foundation of 200G/lane
Legacy RS(528,514) FEC is insufficient for 800G links. The whitepaper emphasizes:
- oFEC (Open FEC): Increases Net Coding Gain (NCG) to ≥12dB via advanced matrix structures and iterative decoding.
- SD-FEC (Soft-Decision FEC): Utilizes soft information for superior error correction.
A critical constraint is maintaining FEC latency below 200ns to support RDMA and RoCEv2 protocols.
Redefining Packaging and Hot-Plug
With typical power exceeding 20W, traditional QSFP cooling is inadequate. New standards include:
- OSFP-XD: Enhanced thermal design and increased pin count for higher power delivery.
- COBO 3.0: Chip-on-Board, removing thermal constraints from the front panel.
These support +3.3V/+12V dual-rail power, Dynamic Power Down (DPD), Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM/DOM), and I²C/SMBus management for hitless replacement.
Future Roadmap: CPO and LPO
The whitepaper is forward-looking, addressing the path beyond 800G:
- Co-Packaged Optics (CPO): Integrating optics directly with the switch ASIC to minimize electrical reach.
- Linear Drive Optics (LPO): Removing the DSP to reduce power and latency.
- Thin-Film Lithium Niobate (TFLN): Offering ultra-high bandwidth and low-power modulation.
Industry Consensus: 800G is the essential bridge to CPO/LPO. Mastering its FEC and packaging is vital for a smooth transition to 1.6T.
